Description
Tokoname is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, with a pottery tradition stretching back nearly a thousand years, and the region's unglazed kyusu teapots are considered among the finest for brewing Japanese green tea. This smoke black kyusu has a distinctive charcoal-dark finish achieved through the smoking process during firing — it's a technique that gives Tokoname ware its characteristic look and enhances the clay's tea-mellowing properties. The larger size makes it ideal for brewing for two or more, or for those who prefer a generous single serving.
Product Details
- Origin: Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, Japan
- Material: Tokoname iron-rich clay, unglazed interior
- Finish: Smoke black (fired with smoking technique)
- Size: Larger size (suitable for 2+ servings)
Why Choose This Kyusu
Tokoname clay is iron-rich, and that iron content interacts with tea tannins in a way that rounds out harsh edges and produces a noticeably smoother brew over time. An unglazed Tokoname kyusu is essentially seasoned by your tea — each brew deposits minute tea oils into the porous clay, gradually developing what collectors call a “tea patina” that subtly improves subsequent brews. The smoke black finish is beautiful in a deeply Japanese way: understated, tactile, and built to age well.
How to Use
Rinse with hot water before first use and season by brewing a few batches of your preferred tea and discarding them. Never use soap on the interior — water rinsing is all this kyusu needs. Use for sencha, bancha, genmaicha, or hojicha. For best results, brew with water at 70–80°C for green teas. The side-handle (yokode) design allows precise pour control even when full.
Perfect for: Serious green tea drinkers who want their tools to match their practice, collectors of Japanese ceramic work, anyone brewing for two or more, and those who appreciate objects that improve with use.
