Tokonameyaki was born in Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture, at the end of the Heian period (794-1192) and has a history of 1,000 years. The city is truly a pottery town, blessed with high-quality clay and trade on a peninsula surrounded by the sea.
Inheriting tradition, focusing on usability, and creating new works. We offer ceramics that are filled with the artist’s thoughts. The beautiful kyusu is an advanced product for celebratory occasions.
Application: Each kyusu is made by hand by craftsmen with great care and attention. The triangular tip of the kyusu mouth allows tea to flow out easily and prevents leakage from the bottom of the pot. It uses an elaborate ceramic tea strainer [ceramish] made by traditional techniques. You can taste the original rich flavor of Japanese tea leaves.

Description
Tokoname's red clay kyusu teapots are among the most recognizable forms in Japanese teaware — the warm, terracotta-like red comes naturally from the region's distinctive iron-rich clay, which fires to that characteristic color without glaze or pigment. This kikkuri-style kyusu brings that tradition into a practical, elegant everyday teapot made entirely in Japan by craftsmen working in one of the country's oldest pottery regions.
Product Details
- Origin: Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, Japan
- Material: Red Tokoname clay, unglazed interior
- Style: Kikkuri kyusu (Japanese teapot)
- Finish: Natural red clay color
Why Choose This Kyusu
The red color of a Tokoname kyusu isn't cosmetic — it's the natural result of firing the region's iron-rich clay, and that iron content is what makes Tokoname ware so valued for tea brewing. Iron ions interact with tea tannins during brewing, softening astringency and producing a rounder, more balanced cup. A well-seasoned red Tokoname kyusu is a genuinely different brewing tool than a glass or ceramic teapot — it actively participates in the flavor rather than just holding liquid. The kikkuri form is a classic Japanese teapot silhouette, compact and well-balanced in hand.
How to Use
Season your new kyusu by rinsing with hot water, then brewing and discarding a few batches of your tea before your first proper brew. Use for sencha, bancha, hojicha, or genmaicha. Brew green teas at 70–80°C for best results. Clean interior with hot water only — no soap, which would be absorbed by the unglazed clay. Dry fully between uses to prevent mold.
Perfect for: Daily green tea drinkers who want a functional piece of Japanese craft, collectors of Tokoname ware, gift-givers looking for a meaningful and practical Japanese item, and anyone who wants to understand why the Japanese take teapot material seriously.
