Description
Tamaryokucha — literally “ball tea” or “curly tea” — is one of Japan's more unusual green teas. Where most Japanese green teas are rolled into straight, needle-like shapes, tamaryokucha leaves are steamed and then tumbled into irregular, curly shapes during processing. The result is a tea with a flavor profile unlike anything else in the Japanese tea lineup.

Flavor Profile
This is where tamaryokucha really distinguishes itself. Unlike the grassy, marine notes of sencha or the deep umami of gyokuro, tamaryokucha offers something unexpected: subtle hints of berry fruit and nut, with a gentle undercurrent of citrus and fresh grass. The flavor is complex and rounded, making it an excellent tea for people who want to explore beyond the standard Japanese green tea experience.
About Oita
Oita Prefecture on the island of Kyushu is known for its volcanic terrain, hot springs, and lush growing conditions. The region's mineral-rich soil and warm, humid climate produce teas with distinctive character. Tamaryokucha production is concentrated in Kyushu — it's relatively rare compared to sencha, making it a genuine find for tea explorers.
Brewing Instructions
For a gentler, sweeter brew: steep at 70°C (160°F) for about 2 minutes. For a bolder, more aromatic cup: steep at 80°C (175°F) for about 1 minute. Use approximately 3-4g per cup. The leaves can be steeped 2-3 times, with each infusion revealing different notes.
Perfect For
Tea explorers looking for something different, people who find standard green tea too grassy, travelers who want quality Japanese tea on the go, and anyone wanting to sample tamaryokucha before committing to a full-size bag.
