Description

Hojicha is a Japanese green tea that has been roasted. Traditionally, the green tea was processed in this manner in a porcelain pot over charcoal at 150 °C.
Roasting the tea helps to not only prevent oxidation but also develop a beautiful light brown / light golden color.
And on top of that, the flavor is about as earthy, roasty and nutty as a Japanese tea can get.
Note that hojicha has very little caffeine content and is commonly consumed all throughout the day. It's especially popular after meals or with dessert because it helps balance out the sweetness!
This bag of hojicha is from Miyazaki, Japan

This was delicious! I found it to have a smooth, earthy, and bold flavor profile. It smells fantastic both in the dry leaves and as it steeps. It leaves a pleasant lingering aftertaste. This would make a wonderful everyday tea for anyone. I personally enjoy it as a mid-afternoon pick-me-up after my morning coffee begins to wear off.

This small bag of hojicha may seem expensive, but the high quality justifies the price. It’s significantly better than cheaper Japanese options, offering a smooth, complex roasted flavor profile.
A short steeping time of half a minute is ideal. Steeping for a minute can be too long. Unlike cheaper teas that degrade quickly, this hojicha can be steeped multiple times, each offering a unique flavor.
It’s a worthwhile investment over cheaper, lower-quality options.

Hochicha is a lightly roasted Green Tea. It isn’t the traditional green color, as it’s brown due to the roasting process. This roasting often imparts a nutty or earthy flavor to the tea. I personally enjoy both roasted and unroasted green teas. This particular Hochicha is quite good, and a little goes a long way. I’ve had Hochicha many times during my travels in Japan, and this is a good representation of that style of tea.

This is a great review of the Hojicha! Here’s a slightly refined version for better clarity and flow:
I was curious about Hojicha before, and I must say, I’m pleasantly surprised! It has a unique and enjoyable flavor. The ten-gram bag may seem small, but it yields several teaspoons of tea, which is quite generous.
This Hojicha is sourced from Miyazaki, Japan, and the roasting process gives it a beautiful dark color and a wonderful toasted flavor with a soothing aroma. Compared to regular green tea, it offers a more distinct and complex taste profile with subtle notes of sweetness reminiscent of toasted grains.
I enjoyed this tea both warm and cold, which is a definite plus. While I found the price a bit high, it’s understandable considering the imported nature of the tea.

I’ve been wanting to try Hojicha all day! Since I’ve enjoyed many teas from this company in the past, I was excited to give it a go. However, I wish the travel bag was a bit larger; 10g of tea seems a little small.
Not being familiar with Hojicha, I steeped it at 180°F for 2 minutes, like I would a standard green tea. The resulting brew was noticeably darker than a typical green tea and had a much bolder flavor than I anticipated.
Overall, it’s an interesting tea. I’m curious to experiment with different steeping times and temperatures to see how the flavor profile changes.

My June 2024 order of all day I eat like a shark tea shop’s Miyazaki Hojicha (Roasted Green Tea) First Harvest Loose Leaf Tea, Travel Size 10g (0.35oz) arrived in a small sealed zip-lock plastic pouch. The label shows JAS certification, a Best Before Date of March 11 2025, and indicates this tea is a product of Miyazaki, Japan.
The difference between this roasted green tea and standard green tea is immediately noticeable when you brew. These roasted leaves can produce a much darker brownish tea (depending on your brew time) with a definite smoky and nutty aroma, with a hint of caramel. The tea still has a relatively mild flavor, but with no bitterness and no grassy taste you get with many non-roasted green teas. This roasted flavor is a nice change-up to traditional green tea.
Based on the amount of tea I used to brew in 20 oz. of water (brewing for 3-4 minutes at 170-180°F for optimal flavor), I think this pouch will deliver at least five large cups of tea for me (maybe a few more). When I ordered in late June 2024, the price was $3.79. Seems like the price has nearly doubled as I write this review in early August 2024. Not sure what is the reasonable price point for this product, but thought this increase worth mentioning

I ‘ve never tried tea like this before, and I really enjoyed it. The tea has a noticeable smoky scent that translates into a robust complex flavor. It only needs 30 seconds brew time and the same leaves can be brewed a few times before discarding. I usually prefer to sweeten my tea, but found this one enjoyable without any sweetener. Overall, I liked this tea and would order again.

This makes a lovely, smooth cup of hojicha tea! It smells wonderful and tastes just as good. I didn’t measure how much I used, as I usually use bagged hojicha. For mine, I steeped it in water around 170°F for just under 3 minutes. It came out perfect!

As a newcomer to roasted teas, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this Hojicha. I frequently travel to Tokyo and somehow never encountered it before, but now I’m a fan! This tea has a smooth and well-balanced flavor. I appreciate the convenient travel size package; it’s easy to slip into my bag for tea on the go. I typically brew it by the cup and have found that one measure yields several cups of delicious tea. The leaves are noticeably larger and less dusty, which is a definite plus. This is a step up from my usual tea routine, and the company name is just a bonus! It’s a great buy!

This tea is very easy to brew and steep. I didn’t notice any loose leaf debris in my cup after steeping. It brews to a beautiful amber color with a pleasant aroma and taste.

Hojicha is my go-to tea, perfect for any season. Unlike some hojicha, this one boasts a delightful mildness, free of bitterness. It still delivers that satisfying roasted aroma and color. The flavor is refreshing with a subtle hint of roast, yet remains smooth and enjoyable.
One of the standout features is the high quality of the tea leaves. They are whole, so you won’t find any dust or powder in your cup, even when using a fine mesh tea ball.

It was my first time drinking this kind of tea. I like the distinctive flavor

Hojicha is my go-to tea year-round. This particular hojicha is a standout – it boasts a mild, smooth flavor with no bitterness whatsoever, yet still retains a delightful roasty aroma and color.
The tea leaves are of high quality, remaining whole without shedding any dust or powder, even when brewed in a fine mesh tea ball. I typically use a teaspoon of leaves for 10 ounces of water and steep for 2-3 minutes for optimal flavor.
This Hojicha rivals the quality of the more expensive hojicha bags I purchased during my travels to Kyoto last year, making it an excellent value. I will definitely be ordering this again!

This Hojicha perfectly captures the flavor I remember from my time in Japan. It’s smooth and mild, with no bitterness, which is exactly what I prefer in a green tea. The leaves are clean and free of dust or powder, which is always a plus. I appreciate the smaller size option, as it allowed me to try it before committing to a larger quantity. Overall, I’m very pleased with this Hojicha.

This is a very small sample of this tea, only 10 grams. However, I was able to make a good tasting cup with just 5 grams, so I’ll likely get two cups of tea from this sample.
The tea itself is really nice! It’s very smooth, with a light toasted flavor. I’m really enjoying it!
klainthabmore –
This Hojicha is a delightful tea! I appreciate its low caffeine content and the fact that the leaves are whole, ensuring a clean cup without any dust or powder. The flavor is pleasant with a smooth and slightly roasted taste. The resealable bag is convenient for travel and makes it easy to store the tea. I also appreciate that this company offers two sizes, allowing me to try a smaller amount before committing to a larger purchase. Overall, this is a high-quality Hojicha that I would definitely recommend.
William –
This tea appears to be authentic Hojicha, based on its flavor profile. It has that characteristic roasted taste I’ve come to expect from Hojicha. While the flavor is good, I wish the bag was a bit larger.
Stardust –
I am new to Hojicha, but I found this tea to be quite enjoyable. Even with a small sample, I was able to brew a couple of good cups. The flavor is smooth and pleasant, with the characteristic roasted notes I’ve come to associate with Hojicha. The quality of the leaves is impressive; they are intact and expand well during brewing, indicating good quality. This is a great way to sample Hojicha before committing to a larger purchase.

My friend, who is married to a Japanese woman, introduced me to this wonderful tea. We enjoyed it together and she shared some valuable tips on how to best savor it. This tea is truly delightful! It has a delicate, slightly grassy flavor that is very pleasant. I particularly appreciate the convenient portion size, making it perfect for enjoying a quick cup of tea while traveling. The tea itself is of excellent quality.

We recently brought this on a road trip and had it while we were in a hotel. What a pleasant surprise. This tea was really good and had a delicate smoky flavor. I’m usually a fan of stronger tasting tea but this one hit the spot especially compared to the usual Lipton teas in hotels. Fantastic.

This is a small bag of hojicha, which may seem a bit pricey at first glance. However, the quality is exceptional and definitely worth the investment. This hojicha boasts a superior flavor compared to cheaper options, even other Japanese brands. It has a smooth, deep, and complex roasted flavor profile. Unlike some lower-quality teas, this one doesn’t require long steeping times. In fact, half a minute is usually sufficient. Additionally, this hojicha can be resteeped multiple times, unlike cheaper brands that often lose their flavor after the first steeping. Overall, this is a high-quality hojicha that I highly recommend.
