This matcha was delicious. It was smooth, earthy, and bold. The aroma was delightful, both from the bag and after brewing. It’s a great everyday tea. I enjoy it in the mid-afternoon for a little pick-me-up after my morning coffee wears off.

Hochicha is a lightly roasted Green Tea. It isn’t the traditional tea that is green. This is brown. The roasting tends to enrich the tea sometimes adding a nutty or earthy like flavor. I personally like both types of teas. This tea is pretty good and a little goes a long way. I’ve had Hochicha many times in Japan and this is a good tea if you like that style.

I chose All Day I Eat Like a Shark’s Organic Hojicha because I’ve generally enjoyed their other teas. While the travel-size bag is convenient, a slightly larger size would be ideal.
Being unfamiliar with hojicha, I initially steeped it at 180F for 2 minutes, like a standard green tea. The resulting tea was darker than usual and had a stronger flavor profile than expected.
It seems I may have over-steeped it. I’ll experiment with shorter steeping times to find the perfect balance.

This tea was a new experience for me, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The noticeable smoky scent translates into a robust, complex flavor. With a short 30-second brew time and the ability to reuse the leaves multiple times, it’s quite efficient. While I usually sweeten my tea, I found this one enjoyable without any added sweeteners. Overall, I’m pleased with this tea and would definitely consider ordering it again.

This hojicha makes a lovely, smooth cup of tea! It has a wonderful aroma and tastes just as good. I didn’t measure the exact amount, but I steeped it in around 170°F water for just under 3 minutes. It turned out perfectly!

These loose leaf teas are a decent value. The taste is as expected from Nihojin, smooth and not overly strong. You’ll need the proper equipment to brew loose leaf tea, but it’s worth it for some.
While I’ve been to Miyazaki and experienced the real deal, these teas are a good, affordable option. They get the job done.

My June 2024 order of Miyazaki Hojicha from All Day I Eat Like a Shark arrived in a small, sealed zip-lock pouch. It’s JAS certified and has a best-before date of March 11, 2025. This tea is a product of Miyazaki, Japan.
A key difference between this roasted green tea and standard green tea is the darker brown color it produces when brewed. It also has a distinct smoky/roasted aroma. While the flavor is relatively mild, it lacks the bitterness and grassy taste common in non-roasted green teas. This roasted flavor offers a refreshing change from traditional green tea.
Based on my usage, I estimate this pouch can yield at least five large cups of tea. The price has increased significantly since my June purchase, rising from $3.79 to nearly double the cost in early August 2024. While the quality justifies a premium price, the recent increase is worth noting.

This tea is very easy to brew and steep. I didn’t find any loose leaf debris in my cup after steeping. It has a beautiful amber color with a pleasant aroma and taste.

As a newcomer to roasted tea, I’m really enjoying this one. I’ve traveled to Tokyo often but hadn’t encountered this type of tea before. Now that I’ve discovered it, I’m a fan. It’s smooth, well-balanced, and the convenient packaging makes it perfect for on-the-go tea. I brew it cup-by-cup and love that I can get multiple brews from a single measure of tea. The tea consists of solid leaves and twigs, free of dust, which is a great quality. This is a significant upgrade from regular tea, and I love the company name! It’s a fantastic purchase.

I enjoyed this unique tea. It was my first time trying this type, and I found the distinct flavor quite appealing.

This sample-sized bag of hojicha is a great way to try this unique tea. It would make a thoughtful gift for tea enthusiasts. The flavor is pleasant and nutty, with a hint of floral notes. The leaves arrived intact, a sign of quality.

The tea leaves resemble morning glory seeds or dried rosemary. The scent is light and earthy. Steeping for five minutes produces a mild, toasted nutty flavor with a subtle floral note. The tea is pleasant to drink, with no bitterness or unexpected aftertaste, similar to Korean corn tea. It’s a great choice for a relaxing moment with a book or for offering to a friend.

While I’m not an expert on Hojicha tea, I can confidently say that this is delicious. Even though it’s a small sample size, it yielded a couple of strong cups of tea. This is a great way to try a new tea before committing to a larger purchase. The tea leaves are of high quality, intact, and expand well in the teapot. They’re not baby leaves but more mature ones.

I’ve enjoyed this tea with a friend who is married to a Japanese woman. She shared valuable tips on how to best appreciate it. This tea is delicate, slightly grassy, and perfect for travel or a quick tea break. The portioning is ideal, and the tea’s quality is excellent. We’ll definitely reorder and gift some to others.

This hojicha loose leaf tea is delicious! I appreciate its low caffeine content, whole leaves, and pleasant flavor. The resealable bag is convenient for travel or trying out the tea. The company offers two sizes, and their products are consistently of high quality. I definitely recommend it.

This is a really nice tea! It’s very smooth with a light toasted flavor. I’m enjoying it a lot.

While it’s difficult to definitively verify all claims, this tea certainly seems to be Hojicha based on its taste, which aligns with other Hojichas I’ve tried.
Cat –
Hojicha is my go-to tea, enjoyed year-round. This particular hojicha is mild, lacking bitterness, yet retains a pleasant roasty aroma and color. The flavor is refreshing with a subtle roastiness, free from any dryness.
The tea leaves are intact, shedding no powder or dust during dispensing or brewing. A teaspoon of leaves for a 10 oz cup worked well for me, with a brewing time of 2-3 minutes.
This is a high-quality hojicha comparable to the more expensive brands I purchased in Kyoto last year. Considering the quality, it’s a great value. I’d definitely buy it again.
PL –
We recently tried this tea during a road trip and were pleasantly surprised by its delicate smoky flavor. It’s a refreshing change from stronger teas like Lipton, especially when staying in hotels. We enjoyed it a lot.

This small bag of hojicha may seem expensive, but the high quality justifies the price. It’s significantly better than cheaper Japanese options, offering a smooth, complex roasted flavor profile.
A short steeping time of half a minute is ideal. Steeping for a minute can be too long. Unlike cheaper teas that degrade quickly, this hojicha can be steeped multiple times, each offering a unique flavor.
It’s a worthwhile investment over cheaper, lower-quality options.
