Description

Rakurakusai — the name itself suggests ease and comfort, and that philosophy shows in this Tokoname ware kyusu design. The black finish comes from the same smoking and oxidation techniques that define Tokoname's traditional firing methods, and the result is a teapot that's both visually sophisticated and deeply practical. If you want a kyusu that looks as good on the table as it performs in the cup, this is it.

Product Details

  • Origin: Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, Japan
  • Material: Tokoname clay
  • Finish: Black (smoked/oxidized firing)
  • Style: Rakurakusai kyusu

Why Choose This Kyusu

Tokoname is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, and its pottery tradition has been shaped around the practical needs of tea drinkers for nearly a millennium. The black Tokoname kyusu achieves its finish through a specific firing and smoking technique that's distinct from simply painting or glazing clay — the color goes all the way through the outer surface. Like all Tokoname ware, the interior clay interacts with tea over time, gradually seasoning to produce mellower, smoother brews. The Rakurakusai form is designed for comfortable, ergonomic handling in everyday use.

How to Use

Rinse with hot water before first use and season by brewing and discarding several initial batches. Ideal for Japanese green teas including sencha, hojicha, and genmaicha. The built-in clay or mesh filter keeps leaves out of the pour without requiring a separate strainer. Clean with hot water only; never use soap on the interior. Store dry and handle the lid separately to protect against chips.

Perfect for: Tea enthusiasts who want functional Japanese craftsmanship in a refined, dark aesthetic, anyone looking for a daily-use kyusu that improves with time, and collectors building a Tokoname teaware set.
