Hojicha is a Japanese green tea that has been roasted. Traditionally, the green tea was processed in this manner in a porcelain pot over charcoal at 150 °C.

Roasting the tea helps to not only prevent oxidation but also develop a beautiful light brown / light golden color.

And on top of that, the flavor is about as earthy, roasty and nutty as a Japanese tea can get.

Note that hojicha has very little caffeine content and is commonly consumed all throughout the day. It's especially popular after meals or with dessert because it helps balance out the sweetness!

  1. Alethea B.

This is a good tea with a nice taste and color. As a newcomer to this type of tea, I don’t have much to compare it to. It’s a pleasant and enjoyable tea.

  2. MelBell

I love to try all kinds of teas, and Hojicha was a delightful surprise. Unlike regular green tea, which I sometimes find a bit off-putting, Hojicha’s roasting imparts a nutty flavor that I truly enjoy. It’s incredibly quick to prepare, requiring only a 40-second steep for a flavorful cup. I even enjoyed a second steep with the same leaves, demonstrating its versatility. I’m definitely a fan!

  3. E. Hodgson

As this was my first experience with this type of tea, I was unsure of the optimal brewing method. Neither the packaging nor the Amazon page provided any brewing instructions. I brewed it like my usual loose leaf teas, using a tea ball and steeping it in slightly below boiling water for a few minutes. The aroma and scent were both delightful. If there’s a recommended brewing method that could further enhance the flavor, I’m eager to try it again.

  4. Kenji

Having experienced various Japanese teas, including green tea, matcha, gyokuro, sencha, and hojicha, I can confidently say that this hojicha is quite enjoyable. It offers a full-bodied flavor profile with rich roasted notes and low astringency. To fully appreciate its flavor, it’s crucial to follow the brewing instructions and avoid scorching the tea with boiling water. I prefer brewing at 175°F for optimal flavor extraction. This hojicha is a great choice for those seeking a high-quality, authentic Japanese tea experience.

  5. Zingo

As a tea enthusiast, I’m always open to trying new varieties. While I’m not a tea connoisseur, I enjoy drinking tea, especially darker blends with various additions. I was drawn to this tea after reading about its potential health benefits. This tea has a pleasant earthy flavor with a noticeable nutty aroma. The aroma is more prominent than the taste, which I appreciate as it’s not overpowering. I’ve started incorporating this tea into my other blends, adding a unique twist to their flavors. When brewed alone, the tea produces a beautiful rosy color. It doesn’t significantly alter the color of other teas when blended and adds a subtle yet distinct flavor profile. Both my husband and I enjoy it.

  6. A.S.

As a green tea enthusiast, I found Hojicha to be a refreshing change of pace. It offers a distinct flavor profile, with a nutty character and a pleasant roasted nuance, free from any bitterness. I brewed it for my usual three minutes, resulting in a robust and flavorful cup.

  7. Deal Seeker

I previously enjoyed Hojicha and was eager to try this brand. This tea has a delightful toasty flavor, falling somewhere between green and black tea. I brewed it without any sweeteners and found it perfectly balanced. The small pouch is reusable, allowing for multiple brews. Overall, this is a high-quality Hojicha with a pleasant and nuanced flavor profile

  8. Bobjaky

I’m a big fan of Hojicha and this tea certainly lives up to the hype. It comes in a small resealable pouch, which is convenient for carrying around. Unlike typical green tea, Hojicha boasts a deeper, roasted flavor profile. The leaves, roasted to a deep brown, are brittle and distinct from traditional green tea leaves. I recommend steeping for at least 3 minutes for optimal flavor extraction.   Hojicha offers a nutty, musty flavor that’s quite enjoyable. If you’ve enjoyed Genmaicha, you’ll likely appreciate Hojicha as well. I also recommend exploring Kukicha for another unique tea experience

  9. Customer Review

I’m a big fan of Hojicha, and this is one of the absolute best I’ve ever tasted! It’s perfectly roasted, with a warm, toasty aroma and flavor, without any bitterness. The quality is exceptional. I appreciate the travel size option for trying new teas. If you love Hojicha, this is a must-try!

  10. David

As a newcomer to Hojicha, I was unsure of the optimal brewing method. Online research suggested a short 30-second steep, which I adjusted to 45 seconds. The result was a pleasant surprise. The tea had an interesting, slightly sweet flavor with a noticeable body, likely due to the roasting process. While I’m still exploring the nuances of brewing Hojicha, this initial experience was quite enjoyable.”

  11. JCTW

As a newcomer to this type of tea, I found the brewing instructions somewhat unclear. The Amazon page states it’s a 2-5 servings bag, but the recommended brewing method suggests using 8g of tea per 240ml of water, which seems excessive for this small bag. I experimented with 2g of tea leaves per mug and brewed for 1 minute, achieving a delicious flavor. Subsequent brews require longer steeping times. While the brewing process requires some experimentation, the tea itself is fantastic. Adding milk, sugar, or salt creates delightful flavor variations. I highly recommend this tea, but be prepared to experiment to find your preferred brewing method

  12. K. J.

This Hojicha offers a unique flavor profile, distinct from traditional green tea. It has a nutty undertone while retaining a gentle astringency. While brewing instructions would have been helpful, I enjoyed experimenting with different brewing times to find my preference.

  13. Adelaide Williams

As a tea enthusiast, I was eager to try this Hojicha. Based on my previous experience with green tea, I steeped one teaspoon in 175-degree water for one minute. The result was a flavorful and enjoyable cup of tea. While the packaging lacks specific brewing instructions, the tea appears to be robust enough to withstand longer steeping times.

  14. Kari & Austin’s Store

This loose leaf Hojicha is a delightful brew for any fan of the tea. Using a strainer prevents any loose leaves from ending up in your drink. The Hojicha itself offers a pleasant aroma and flavor.

  15. mmsNora

I packed this tea for my recent trip to Germany to ensure I could enjoy a good cup of tea wherever I stayed. Its fragrant aroma captivated my traveling companions, so I had to share! The tea has a bright, refreshing flavor, and we were able to brew multiple cups from each tablespoon. The compact size of this item makes it perfect for travel.

  16. Carry Me Up

Despite having prior experience with hojicha, I initially brewed it like regular green tea. I later learned that the optimal brewing temperature is around 176°F for 1 minute. Despite the brewing error, the tea still had a pleasant flavor.

  17. M.EL

I enjoy steeping hojicha in hot water for 15 minutes to fully release its delightful aroma and flavor. The fragrance is truly ambrosial, and the tea itself is made with organic roasted green tea leaves. Hojicha is not only delicious but also potentially beneficial for the immune system. I find myself enjoying up to two cups a day to savor its taste and potential health properties.

  18. HappyFamily

This Hojicha tea offers a delightful roasted green tea flavor. I appreciate its low caffeine content, making it a suitable choice for evening enjoyment. I would definitely recommend it.

  19. Nicole

As a novice to Japanese teas, I was unsure of what to expect. This Hojicha offered a unique and intriguing flavor profile. It had a pleasant earthy depth that I found quite enjoyable. While I’m still learning about the nuances of Japanese teas, this was a delightful first experience with Hojicha

  20. Naeem

As a green tea enthusiast, I was curious to try Hojicha. It’s quite lovely, more fragrant than traditional green tea, and exhibits a flavor profile that leans towards oolong. The roasting process imparts a unique flavor, with a subtle raspberry aftertaste that I found quite intriguing.

  21. Amazon Customer

This is a perfect travel size bag and like that it is organic. Will be using it on my travels. I like loose leaf teas because you get better flavors. I recommend this travel size bag. Takes very little room and will keep in my bag.

  22. The Velvet

This is delightful. It’s got the thick, rich Hojicha flavor profile, it’s not at all bitter and omg it’s just so smoooooth. It’s got a great aroma and aftertaste that leaves me wanting more I’d get a full sized bag of this. I’d get a barrel of it!

  23. WISHFUL THINKING

I enjoy this Shizuoka’s Organic Hojicha loose leaf tea. It has a subtle sweetness and a rich, full flavor. Even with a small amount of tea leaves, it brews into a flavorful cup. The travel-friendly size makes it convenient for enjoying a cup of this delightful tea on the go.
